LIFE ON CAMPUS
Student
life refers to both academic and non-academic aspects of campus life where
students gain experiences while studying at the university. The campus has
become a second home for students because students spend a lot of time in
campus. Quality campus life can be beneficial for students, university
administrators and faculties. Quality campus life can improve generic skills,
academic achievement, learning outcomes, student persistence and student
development. Quality of campus life has been studied in different point of
views. Many past researchers evaluate the quality of campus life in terms of
formal curriculum or quality of teaching and learning and informal curriculum
or college activities, out-of-classroom experiences and extracurricular
activities. There are many dimensions to measure the quality of campus life
that have been explored, but yet they are still inconclusive. Some arguments
are focused on the issue to build a new comprehensive instrument that covers
total quality of campus life among students.
I
have been studied at Mara University of Tecnology (UiTM) Machang Campus
Kelantan between years 2003 until 2006 where im finished my Diploma in Business
Studies. I have experiences as a University student where I love my life at
Campus. It is very interesting and nice memories there. Although now I am
working as an assiatant auditor, I always remind about that sweet memories dan
always thinking and pray that one day I can to study full time again as an
university student and feel back the sweet of life campus. Life campus that I
have been feel are washing my clothes by self, study hard always visit library,
finished my assignment, join sport and recreational club. It make me be more
though and indepence by my self. Life campus teach me how to be strong and
finished my tasks quickly. There are many skill I have such as teamwork skills,
entrepreurship skills, critical thinking and problem solving skills, leadership
skills and communication skills.So when graduated I can survive in the real
world and jobs environment.
Total
Quality of campus life are categorized into four categories which are formal
curriculum, support service quality and subjective well-being. Firstly is
quality of campus life based on formal curriculum. It also known as quality of
teaching and learning has been extensively studied by previous researchers. The
study proved that students’ participation in formal curriculum in terms of
quality of teaching and learning has influenced students generic skills such as
teamwork skills, entrepreneurship skills, lifelong learning and information
management skills, ctritical thinking and problem solving skills, professional
ethics skills, leadership skills and communication skills. Secondly,is quality
of campus life based on informal curriculum or can be specified as college
activities and out-of-classroom experiences. Co-curricular activities like
sport and games, uniform body unit, society and clubs affect student’s generic
skills specified in management generic skills such as planning, management,
organization, conflicts, control and assessment.
Thirdly
is quality of life campus based on support service quality. It significantly
been effected by various college services such as satisfaction with education
service, administrative service, and facilities service. And lastly quality of campus life based on
subjective well-being where to motivate university adminitrators to improve the
quality of campus life of their student. In additional, I attracted with New
Sunday Times newspaper which published on Sunday 14 April 2013 that story about
green campus where University of Malaya promoted cycling for mobility. Recycle
to cycle is a bike sharing venture which enables UPM students to rent bicycles
on campus usiang a point systems which they need only drop off recyclable items
at designated collection centres in the university to collet points. It is will
inspire students to reduce their carbon footprint and adopt a healthy
lifestyle.
Student’s
experience obtained from the quality of campus life can also give a positive
impact on student development. Thus, the university can provide support by
providing the best services and facilities to the students. In fact, the
quality of campus life could also serve as a method for the university to
engage with the students in campus life to boost student development and their
future career. As a student, we must be professional and problem solver, not a
problem maker.
